Progress through the Order's programme of Alchemical refinement follows a four Degree system:
- the Probationer Degree (or 0°), into which prospective members are placed;
- the First Degree (or 1°), the basic Initiate Degree;
- the Second Degree (or 2°), the intermediate Initiate Degree; and, finally
- the Third Degree (or 3°), the advanced Initiate Degree.
Each Degree is or may be subdivided for convenience into a number of Grades. Grades and Degrees have specific requirements which must be met before a Candidate can be elevated to the next Grade or Degree. These are outlined under Programme and Curriculum.
Members of any given Grade or Degree are responsible
- to their peers for their conduct and for mutual support;
- to their superiors for the evaluation of their progress, and ultimately via the hierarchy to the leaders of the Order;
- to their subordinates, if any, for mentorship, support, and, where necessary, admonition.
